Fresh water Analysis: A fundamental test for your yacht

The quality of drinking water aboard a yacht isn’t just a matter of taste, but a priority for the health of crew and guests. Fresh water analysis is a crucial test to ensure the water is safe to drink and use daily.

According to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006) , shipowners must conduct frequent and documented inspections of drinking water supplies. Weekly checks of water systems and food supplies are recommended to maximize onboard safety. Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the importance of monitoring water at its source—port or quay—to ensure its wholesomeness upon embarkation.

The ship’s master is responsible for operational monitoring, especially after maintenance or repairs, checking parameters such as pH, disinfectant residue (e.g., free chlorine), and microbial quality . Physical inspection of various dispensing points is also recommended by ILO Convention 78.

Three categories of parameters define water quality:

  • Physical : turbidity, color, odor, temperature, conductivity
  • Chemicals : pH, hardness, nitrates, chlorides, sulfates, lead
  • Biological : Escherichia coli , coliforms, Enterococci , Legionella pneumophila and microorganisms at 22° and 36°C

While initial results may require frequent testing — especially on new or post-repair yachts — the frequency can be reduced with stable, controlled systems.

Regular analysis is not only good practice, but a requirement for international compliance and health safety. With thorough monitoring, every yacht can ensure clean, safe, and high-quality water, protecting health and comfort on every voyage.
